Dallas – Next month, dredging activities will begin at Bachman Lake, a recreational jewel of northwest Dallas. The Dallas City Council approved the dredging construction contract on October 29, 2021, the first phase of the Bachman Lake Dredging and Dam and Spillway Rehabilitation Project. Dallas Water Utilities, in partnership with Dallas Park and Recreation, is leading the project at the lake. The contractor will begin mobilizing equipment in late January of 2022 and dredging activities will begin in February.

The major dredging project is to begin once the dredging barge is on site. The contractor will use the machinery to pump silt to an off-site location, where the slurry will be dewatered to load onto trucks for offsite disposal. The dewatered sediment will be disposed of, while the water will be clarified and pumped back into Bachman Lake. Dredging will result in the removal of 370,000 cubic yards of accumulated sediment from the lake and restore water depth to a minimum of eight feet. This depth prevents invasive aquatic vegetation from taking hold and removes debris and trash from the lake bottom, improving water quality and restoring the lake to recreational levels.

The public should be advised that there will be some temporary disruptions to park users. Primarily, the south parking lot next to the Dallas Rowing Club will be closed and restricted to allow dredging crews to safely perform their work. Lake users should steer clear of the barge and floating pipe that will pump out the silt that has settled in Bachman Lake. Boaters should keep a safe distance from the dredging pipe (25 feet) and barge (75 feet). The dredging work should be completed by the Winter of 2022 and 2023, weather permitting.

The next phase of the project includes the rehabilitation of the Bachman dam and spillway. Dam and spillway improvements are in the final design phase and will address regulatory flood capacity as well as structural and stability recommendations to ensure dam safety and regulatory compliance, minimize flood risk, and allow residents to enjoy the lake for years to come. The tentative date for the completion of the final design and bidding of the Bachman Dam and Spillway Rehabilitation Project is the Winter of 2022 and 2023. Dallas Water Utilities expects the Bachman Lake Dam and Spillway Improvements Project to be completed by the Spring of 2025, weather permitting.
